Centrifuges, Coal & Mineral Processing Vertical & Horizontal Basket Systems

Definition & Overview

What are Centrifuges in Mining & Coal Processing?

In mining and coal processing, centrifuges, also called centrifuge machines, are high-speed dewatering devices that use centrifugal force to separate moisture from wet coal or mineral slurry after washing. They are essential in coal preparation plants (coal washeries) to achieve low product moisture levels before transportation and combustion.

Unlike vibrating screens, which dewater by gravity and vibration, centrifuges spin the material at high speed, generating forces many times greater than gravity dramatically reducing moisture content. John Finlay manufactures basket centrifuges (filtering centrifuges) for coarse and middling coal achieving 5–9% product moisture, and slime centrifuges for fine coal slurry achieving <16% product moisture.

John Finlay also supplies the Screen Bowl Centrifuge (JFH series) and Vertical Vibrating Scroll Discharge Centrifuge (JFCB series), both carrying four national patents and recognized as National Key New Products by China Building Material Group.

How Centrifuges Work in Coal Processing

Understanding the centrifuge machine’s working principle is essential for coal washery engineers selecting dewatering equipment for preparation plants.

01

Wet Coal or Slurry Feed

Feed Entry

Wet coal (from dense media separation or screening) or fine coal slurry is fed into the centrifuge at a controlled rate. The feed size determines the centrifuge type basket centrifuges handle 0.5–50mm; slime centrifuges handle 0–13mm fine slurry.

02

High-Speed Rotation

Centrifugal Force

High-Speed Rotation
The basket or bowl spins at high speed, generating centrifugal force many times greater than gravity. This forces moisture outward through the perforations of the basket wall while coal solids are retained inside, achieving far lower moisture levels than vibrating screens

03

Moisture Removal

Separation

For basket centrifuges, liquid passes through perforated basket walls into housing and drains away. For slime/decanter centrifuges a scraper or scroll conveyor continuously discharges dewatered solids. John Finlay's basket centrifuges achieve 5–9% product moisture; slime centrifuges achieve <16%.

04

Dewatered Coal Product

Discharge

It  is discharged continuously from the centrifuge for conveying to stockpile or further processing. vibration mechanism on HLL basket centrifuges assists discharge and prevents blockages. Intelligent Early Warning System monitors all operating parameters in real time for predictive maintenance

Advantages of Industrial Centrifuges in Coal Processing

John Finlay's centrifuge machines deliver measurable performance advantages over conventional vibrating screen dewatering — across moisture reduction, throughput, reliability and operating cost.

Superior Moisture Reduction

Basket centrifuges achieve 5–9% product moisture far lower than vibrating screen dewatering (typically 15–25%). Lower moisture means higher calorific value, lower freight cost, and better combustion performance for thermal coal.

High-Capacity Dewatering

HLL basket centrifuges process up to 450 t/h in a single unit. JFH Screen Bowl Centrifuges handle up to 120 t/h of –0.5mm coal fines. JFCB scroll discharge models process up to 200 t/h covering the full coal size range in a single plant

Exceptional Wear Resistance

Constructed using high-alumina ceramics and premium imported wear-resistant materials. All critical wear components basket, scraper, bell hood, outlet protection rings engineered for extended service life under harsh slurry conditions.

Stable, Low-Noise Operation

Adjustable vibration amplitude ensures optimal performance across varying coal grades. Low noise design with corrosion resistance and mechanical reliability suitable for 24-hour continuous operation in coal preparation plants.

Smart Automation (Optional)

Intelligent Early Warning Health System: real-time data collection, anomaly detection, automated maintenance alerts. Reduces manual patrols and spot checks. Predictive maintenance tools reduce unscheduled downtime and labor costs significantly.

Patented Technology

JFH Screen Bowl and JFCB Scroll Discharge Centrifuges each carry four national patents. Both series are recognized as National Key New Products by China Building Material Group and Tangshan City, reflecting proven innovation and commercial validation.

Applications

Applications in Coal and Mineral Processing

John Finlay's industrial centrifuge machines serve critical dewatering and recovery duties across coal washery, fine coal beneficiation, and mineral processing plants.

Middling Coal Dewatering

HLL basket centrifuges dewater wet middling coal from dense media circuits achieving 5–9% moisture, reducing handling costs, and improving downstream coal quality for blending or direct sale.

Clean Coal Dewatering

Horizontal vibrating basket centrifuges dewater clean coal product from dense media separation essential for achieving specification moisture levels for coking coal (to steel mills) and thermal coal (to power stations).

Fine Coal Slurry Recovery

FLL slime centrifuges and JFH Screen Bowl Centrifuges recover and dewater fine coal slurry (0–13mm, and –0.5mm) that would otherwise report to tailings significantly improving overall plant yield and reducing waste.

Coarse Slime Beneficiation

JFCB Vertical Vibrating Scroll Discharge Centrifuges handle coarse slime (0.5–25mm) dewatering combining high throughput with consistently low product moisture for coal products entering the fine coal circuit.

Centrifuge Machines | Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from process engineers, plant operators, and procurement teams about industrial centrifuge selection for coal washery and mineral processing.

In mining and coal processing, centrifuges are high-speed dewatering machines that use centrifugal force to remove moisture from wet coal or mineral slurry after washing. They achieve significantly lower product moisture levels than vibrating screen dewatering, John Finlay’s basket centrifuges achieve 5–9% product moisture, and slime centrifuges achieve <16%, enabling lower transport costs, higher calorific value, and better combustion performance for coal. Types include basket centrifuges (filtering centrifuges), decanter-type slime centrifuges, screen bowl centrifuges, and scroll discharge centrifuges.

A basket centrifuge (also called a perforated basket centrifuge or filtering centrifuge) uses a rotating perforated basket, moisture passes through the perforations while coal solids are retained and discharged by vibration or scraper. It handles coarser coal (0.5–50mm) and achieves 5–9% product moisture. A decanter centrifuge (decanter separator) uses a solid bowl with a scroll conveyor to continuously separate and discharge fine solids from slurry, suited for finer material (0–13mm). John Finlay’s HLL series are basket centrifuges; the FLL series are scraper type slime centrifuges used for fine coal.

A vertical basket centrifuge (vertical centrifuge) has its basket axis oriented vertically feed enters from the top, and dewatered solids are discharged downward. John Finlay’s FLL1200L G is a vertical scraper slime centrifuge for very fine coal (0–3mm), capacity 80 t/h, 55kW motor. A horizontal basket centrifuge (such as John Finlay’s HLL series) has its basket axis horizontal with a vibrating discharge mechanism, better suited for coarser coal (0.5–50mm) at higher throughputs (up to 450 t/h). The choice depends on feed size, throughput requirement, and plant layout constraints.

In coal processing, a high speed centrifuge refers to any centrifuge operating at speeds sufficient to generate high centrifugal force, typically basket centrifuges (HLL series) and scroll discharge centrifuges (JFCB series), which spin at 970–1480 rpm. The JFH Screen Bowl Centrifuge operates at 500–900 rpm, depending on bowl size. Higher speeds generate greater centrifugal force, reducing product moisture. John Finlay’s JFCB series achieves 5–7% moisture for coarse slime at speeds up to 1480 rpm.
