DEFINITION & OVERVIEW

What is a Teetered Bed Separator?

The John Finlay Teetered Bed Separator is a high-efficiency settling and interference separation system that benefits coal and minerals through precise density-based separation. A rising water flow creates a controlled, turbulent fluidized bed; coarse slime sorts by density within that bed, reporting to overflow or underflow depending on whether it's lighter or denser than the separation density set for the run.

The system is built around automated control rather than manual adjustment. A high-precision KOSO electric actuator handles discharge with zero positioning lag, an IP68-rated density sensor monitors the bed in real time to an accuracy of 0.001 g/cm³, and a Siemens PLC-based control system ties it together with a 0.22 microsecond instruction time fully automated regulation that eliminates the manual tuning a simpler separator would need.

Five models cover a feed range from 50 to 170 m³/h, all operating across the same 1.15 to 1.65 g/cm³ separation density range and 0.15 to 2 mm feed granularity. The model selection is a capacity decision, not a duty-type decision, since the separation characteristics stay consistent across the range.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

How the Teetered Bed Separator Works

Automated sensing and control keep the fluidized bed at the correct separation density continuously, not just at setup.

Stable Feed Entry

The inline feed system delivers a uniform, stable slurry flow into the separator, minimizing turbulence at the entry point.

Fluidized Bed Formation

Rising water flow, distributed evenly by wear-resistant polyurethane turbulence plugs, creates a controlled, turbulent fluidized bed.

Density-Based Stratification

Material stratifies within the fluidized bed by density across a 1.15 to 1.65 g/cm³ separation density range.

Continuous Density Monitoring

An IP68-rated density sensor monitors bed density in real time to an accuracy of 0.001 g/cm³, feeding data continuously to the control system.

Automated Discharge Control

The Siemens PLC system processes sensor data at 0.22μs instruction time and drives the KOSO electric actuator to control discharge with zero positioning lag, automatically holding the correct separation density.

COMPARISON

Teetered Bed Separator vs. Coarser Fine-Coal Separation

Teetered Bed Separator

Sharp separation at a low cut point (per John Finlay's own technology comparison)
Higher yield at lower ash content
Fully automated density control, Siemens PLC-based
Best suited to fine coal and middlings, high-value applications
Requires clean, well-classified, low-dilution feed

Coarser Separation Technologies

Typically a coarser cut point, higher throughput
Ash rejection depends on the specific technology and duty
May rely more on manual adjustment
Better suited to coarser, higher-tonnage streams
Less sensitive to fine feed classification and dilution
Applications

Applications of the Teetered Bed Separator

Coarse slime beneficiation is the named application in John Finlay's own product documentation, with a feed range and density range that support fine coal and middling duty specifically.

Coarse Slime Beneficiation

The direct, named application has high recovery rates and reduced operating costs on coarse slime that other technologies handle less precisely.

Fine Coal Separation

The 0.15–2mm feed granularity range and 1.15–1.65 g/cm³ separation density support fine coal duty specifically.

Middles Reprocessing

A sharp, automated cut-point recovers additional value from middling streams other technologies may not separate as precisely.

High-Value, High-Precision Applications

Automated density control to 0.001 g/cm³ accuracy suits applications where the economics justify precision over raw throughput.
